Only this time, it's looking forward, not back. The Istanbul Modern, opened in December 2004, occupies a crisp, utilitarian, and highly functional 7,990 sq. m (86,000 sq. ft.) in a former Customs warehouse just outside the cruise-ship docks. The collection of paintings, portraits, sculptures, and photographs in the permanent collection tell us, in some sense, what was going on in the minds of the Turks in the 20th century. Some pieces simply make you tilt your head in wonder. The museum also serves as a sort of cultural center, with video programs, films, and a multimedia research library. The on-site restaurant has views of Topkapi Palace.
